How to Advocate for Yourself in the NDIS
Navigating the NDIS can feel overwhelming, but one thing is certain: your voice matters. The best support starts with knowing what you need and speaking up for yourself. Whether you're choosing a provider, reviewing your plan, or making sure your supports align with your goals, advocating for yourself is key. Here’s how to do it effectively.

Be Clear About Your Needs
Before any provider meeting, take a moment to write down your goals. What kind of support do you want? What activities or skills do you want to build? Having a clear idea of your priorities helps ensure you receive services that genuinely suit you rather than a generic, one-size-fits-all approach.
Ask for Changes if Something Isn't Working
If you’re not happy with the support you’re receiving, speak up. You don’t have to settle for services that don’t meet your needs. If a support worker isn’t the right fit, or if an activity doesn’t align with your goals, you have the right to ask for changes. A good provider will listen and adjust to ensure you feel comfortable and supported.
Know Your Rights
Many people don’t realise how much choice and control they have in the NDIS. You can switch providers if you’re unhappy, request plan reviews if your needs change, and even seek independent advocacy if you need extra support navigating the system. Understanding these rights empowers you to make informed decisions that benefit you.
Choose a Provider That Values Your Voice
The right provider won’t just offer services—they’ll work alongside you to create a plan that supports your independence and growth. Look for a team that listens, adapts, and genuinely cares about your goals.
Your Support, Your Choice
At IDSS, we believe in participant-led support, because no one knows your needs better than you. We’re here to listen, adapt, and ensure your NDIS journey is one that empowers you.
